In the English class of 2019-2020, the learning objectives are to improve and excel in writing, reading, speaking, and understanding. The project I am submitting as an artifact to this class focused on my improvement in professional writing and public speaking and presentation. These skills are extremely important to my future because they will be used repeatedly when I go to college, in my job, and day to day life.
With this assignment, I showed and achieved the learning objective of Self-Directed Learning and Effective Communication by demonstrating proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking. To complete this project we first needed to read and understand the book Monster by Walter Dean. The book talks about how a teen’s life was almost completely changed by a single event. He was on trial for the felony murder of a drug store owner. The book describes his stress and trauma of being wrongly accused, but it is up to the reader to decide whether he was truly innocent.
Secondly, we were required to write our own closing statement about Steve’s trial, in which we either defended or accused him of the murder. We worked in teams of 4 and together wrote a script in google docs. Finally, we presented the closing statement in front of the class, while competing with a team that wrote a closing statement that opposed ours. With this, I achieved a learning objective of Demonstrating Oral Presentation Skills. I had a hard time presenting in front of a class and a camera, but I overcame that fear by reading over the scrips a couple of times before standing up to present. Although I didn’t make clear eye contact with the audience, I did my best to read the script without stuttering.
Throughout this process listed above, I have realized I have grown in public speaking and presenting. I read the script smoothly with few mistakes. I was extremely anxious during the presentation but managed to read slowly and clearly regardless. I have also learned a lot about the law, court procedures, and the American criminal and civil legal system. I have found this very interesting and perhaps even useful.
